Rotations II (2006)


ROTATIONS II is a kinetic music.Kinetic sounds are sounds which main characteristics are their space behavior. In this piece the sound space behaviours are rhythmic desynchronised and resynchronised delays and phase spatial interferences. Most sound and composition material is related to the principle of rotation : Phase rotation, delay rotation, objects rotations…The spatial distribution is made point by point, each source on a loudspeaker. The diffusion can be done either on 8 different speakers (tracks) at a fixed level, or adding other 8 tracks lines of speakers voice per voice or mixed speakers for different interpretation effects. It is a mostly entertaining and musical pleasure searching music, with dynamic distribution virtuosity (spatial and temporal). Listening follows processes and their evolutions, transformation, ruptures as it creates forms in the room space. Referring to listeners, this piece gives a physical graphic or solid presence to the music in the space.

The piece is a personal work a first version under the title of Gestes had been created in Bourges 2005. The hole piece was then commission by the INA/GRM and created at Radio-France 10th December 2006.

Rotations II est une musique électroacoustique cinétique. Les sons cinétiques ont des qualités spatiales qui font que si on les enregistre et on les rediffuse en mono ou stéréo, on perd ce qui les rend remarquables. Par exemple le bruit de la cascade ou le vent dans les arbres. Il y maintes façons d’en produire. Dans cette pièce, les comportements distributifs dans l’espace sont essentiellement rythmiques. Il s’agit de jouer sur le décalage d’échantillons sonores localisés point à point sur chacune des huit voix du dispositif sans effet de salle, un son sur chaque enceinte. Les évènements sonores se désynchronisent dans le temps et l’espace puis se re-synchronisent progressivement pour lancer un nouveau jeu de rotations.
La plupart des composants de la pièce se rapportent à la notion de rotations. Rotations de phase, retard cycliques en rotation, rotation d’objets concrets…
La diffusion peut se faire soit sur 8 enceintes (8pistes) à niveau fixe soit en ajoutant à ce dispositif d’autres sources sonores mixées ou indépendantes pour permettre une meilleure interprétation de la pièce in situ. Il s’agit d’une pièce qui vise au plaisir musical. Une certaine virtuosité temporelle et spatiale y est recherchée. L’écoute suggérée serait de suivre les processus, transformations, ruptures, évolutions de la matière sonore dans sa plasticité et sa musicalité dans leur déploiement dans espace de la salle. Cette pièce est un travail personnel. Une première version a été jouée à Bourges en 2005 sous le titre de Gestes, puis reprise complètement au GRM en 2006 sous le titre de Rotations II.


Instructions for diffusion: It should be performed on a minimum of 8 identical speakers, each one playing a different track though a 8 track sound card and a mixing table where each track output is controlled by a separate fader. A more complex diffusion system can give a better rendering (see further on) The player if on a computer connected with the soundcard. In addition with the 8 mono tracks, two kinds of player files are provided : a max/MSP player for mac OS X / Windows (on demand) and a digidesign Pro Tools cession. I will come with my laptop and could perform the piece from it or from an external computer. The main octophonic diffusion system should be a circle around or suspended over the audience. A second line or more 8 speakers systems can be added, in order to give expression possibilities. In addition, some mix group speakers can be used, for example for subwoofers, near field trebles, solo speakers, distant effects… For these effects, the 8 tracks can be downmixed into mono (1track), stereo(two tracks) or quadro (four tracks). It is very important that the track number 1 is always at the back-left and increments turning clockwise as shown on the schematic.Once the 8 tracks are set to the right level, the interpret can play on groups of stereo sums of the 8 tracks which he or she can add or remove freely for density and space balance variations. The outputs of pro tools cession or Max/MSP player can be modified according to the diffusion system. Each group of eight is set by default from left to right preferably in a circle, a semi circle or eventually on a line, but any intermediary set is also possible since the distance between the speakers and the public is more or less the same. It is nevertheless important that the order of the voices in the space of the venue is respected. The level of the 8 voices should be mostly modified globally according to a general level interpretation or eventually smooth balances within different areas of the set. The max player allows to play the piece without Pro Tools on any machine. It is a “max collective file” which includes all necessary files including audio. To use it, you must install max/msp from web site and launch it with MaxMSP Runtime. The max player output is set to core audio Mac osX, it can be open and modified from ‘dsp driver setup’
